Nelson Mandela created some quotes in his life time that at first glance, make no sense, but when you ponder on the carefully they start to come together and make sense. Nelson Mandelas Presidency

in 1991 Nelson Mandela was elected president of the National Congress. After 3 more years, blacks were allowed to vote and Nelson became president of South Africa. In 1995 South Africa held the Rugby world cup and President Mandela wore the Springbok jersey for the capital of the South African Rugby team. This was seen as a major step in uniting the whites and the blacks in South Africa. After many years he was apointed a matitor in the civil war, and exactly one year later developed prostate cancer. In 2004, he announced his retierment publicaly. Also in 2004, he gave a speak at an AIDS Conference. Nelson inspired many great people. Then in 2005, Nelsons son, Makgotho Mandela died of AIDS.

Nelson Mandela tried for Treason

During 1956 in South Africa 144 people in South Africa were arrested during raids. Another week later another 12 people were arrested. Some of the more important people in the raids that were arrested were Nelson Mandela, Chief Albert Luthuli, and Walter Sisulu. All in all over 156 people were arrested. They people out of these people there was 105 blacks, 21 indians, 27 whties, and 7 Coloureds. About a year later the charges against 61 of the accused had been let off and they were free; but another 95 poeple, almost all black, were still being charged. Out of that 95, was Nelson Mandela, and a majority of Black Africans. After another week of throwing around evidence and people being let free. The final 30 remainded. Nelson and Walter were among the 30. After another rigurouse week of trials and faulty evidence the final 30 were discharge because they evidence holding them there was not correct even though the highest levels of the government were trying to change it to be the truth. After this trial another large even shook the peace in South African it was called the Sharpeville Massacre.

Interesting Facts

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in the province of the Cape of Good Hope. Later, when he was older, his family moved to a small town called Mvezo where be became a herd-boy. He also learned how to hunt, use a sling shot, and get honey from bee's and fruit out of the tall trees. When he was 7 years old, he was the first in his family to attended school. While getting his education from the British, white government, he was given the name Nelson. During 1927, his father died and his mother moved Nelson and his family to Mqhekezweni. Since his fathers death, his mothe wanted him to have a guardian. So the preist at a local church took the time to be the guardian and "father figure" in young Nelson's life. After attending church, which was ran by his guardian, Nelson went to college that was also ran by the white british government. He came home to visit and soon ran away so he could escape an aranged marrage. After this he was sent to a prision, the reason not know. When he was finally realeased he became the first black politicial leader of South African, and started his own family.

Born: July 18, 1918


Nelson Mandela during the 1940's was inprisoned with other black african americans for there race. He was young, and his pleasures were listening to music of Handel or Tchaikovsky and watching the sunset.


Nelson Mandela spent over 27 years in a South African Prison. He was released in 1990 at the age of 72 years old and went right into his political life.

While in the prison he was on a rough and percise schedule.



  • 4:30 a.m.- wake up


  • 5:00 a.m.- Start morning work out, for atleast an hour


  • 6:30 a.m.- Breakfast, and morning paper

After this was completed they would start the days work. This lasted 12 hours of the day and was to be completed in a good, efficient amount of time.


When Nelson Mandela was released from this prison he became the President of the National Congress. Then later he was elected President of South Africa.

Nelson Mandela was a very important politial figure in South Africa. He was the first black leader in a country that is over 80% African American, and showed this small country what they could be. He has been honored with many different award including The Nobel Peace Prize.
